What is included in a diagnostic inspection?

A diagnostic inspection helps identify the cause of a problem with your car and the next steps needed to resolve it. Depending on how you arrange the inspection, it includes either a mechanic coming to the vehicle’s location or free collection and delivery providing the vehicle is drivable.

The standard time allowed for a diagnostic inspection is 0.9 hours (54 minutes).

What will the mechanic do?

The mechanic will review the symptoms you described, check the relevant parts of the vehicle and use diagnostic equipment where appropriate. The checks depend on the problem; a diagnostic inspection is not a fixed checklist or just a fault-code scan.

When booking, describe when the problem happens, any warning lights and whether the fault comes and goes. Make sure the mechanic can access the vehicle and its keys.

What happens afterwards?

The mechanic will explain their findings, provide a report and recommend the next step. If the fault cannot be confirmed during the inspection, they should explain what they checked and whether further investigation is needed.

A minor issue may be resolved within the booked inspection time if no additional parts or labour are needed. Repairs requiring parts, extra time or another appointment need a separate quote through ClickMechanic. You can decide whether to accept it; additional parts are not included in the inspection price.
