Does an MOT cover the engine and gearbox? What do they check during an MOT?
An MOT test checks key safety and emissions components of your vehicle to ensure it meets legal roadworthiness standards. It is not the same as a service and does not include checks on the engine, clutch, or gearbox.
The test covers areas such as brakes, tyres, seatbelts, exhaust emissions, lights, and visibility, ensuring the vehicle is safe to drive.
Car parts tested in the MOT
These are some of the critical parts of your car that will be checked in the MOT.
Whatβs Checked During an MOT?

π Fuel System β No leaks; pipes and fuel cap secure.
π Exhaust Emissions & System β Meets legal emissions standards; exhaust is secure and not too noisy.
π Brakes β Functionality, performance, ABS warning lights, and efficiency tested.
π Tyres & Wheels β Correct tread depth, size, and condition; TPMS warning light checked (post-2012 vehicles).
π Lights & Indicators β Condition, operation, and aim, including LED and HID headlights.
π Steering & Suspension β Condition, steering lock mechanism, and electronic steering warning lights.

Why Might a Car Fail an MOT?
β Tyres below the legal tread depth (1.6mm minimum).
β Worn brake pads or discs affecting performance.
β Faulty lights or indicators (bulbs, alignment, or operation issues).
β Excess emissions or a damaged exhaust system.
β Warning lights on the dashboard (ABS, airbag, ESC, TPMS, etc.).
What If My Car Fails Its MOT?
If your vehicle fails, the mechanic will provide a failure report (VT30) detailing the issues. Youβll need to arrange repairs before the car can pass a retest and be legally driven again.
