MOT Certificates
Do garages still give paper MOT certificates?
Not by default. From 29 April 2024, the DVSA stopped requiring garages to issue paper MOT pass certificates as standard. Instead, you’ll be directed to view your MOT details online.
Where can I see my MOT details?
You can check your MOT status and history on the Government’s MOT history check website. Just enter your vehicle registration number.
Can I still get a paper MOT certificate?
Yes. You can:
Ask your garage for a paper copy (some may charge a small fee).
Download one yourself using the 11-digit reference from your V5C logbook. Get a replacement MOT certificate
What if my car fails its MOT?
For most MOT fails, a paper record will still be given — especially if there are multiple faults.
Paper records must also be issued if your car fails the emissions test.
Why has this changed?
The DVSA made this change to:
Save thousands of trees’ worth of paper each year.
Reduce fraud risks with fake certificates.
Make the MOT process quicker and easier.
