When a mechanic inspects your vehicle, they may recommend additional repairs. These can be quoted in two different ways, depending on how the quote is created:
1. Mechanic-issued follow-on quote (set labour rate)
If your mechanic creates a custom follow-on quote, this will use a set labour rate. This rate is agreed upon in advance and remains unchanged regardless of the type of repair.
2. System-generated follow-on quote (variable labour rate)
If the additional work is quoted through our quote engine, the system will calculate the labour cost using a variable labour rate. This means the rate can differ depending on:
- The type of repair or service
- The make and model of your vehicle
- Other technical factors, such as standardised repair times
Because of this, the labour cost you see on a system-generated quote may not match the set rate used on custom quotes.
Why is there a difference?
We partner with leading automotive data providers who supply industry-standard repair times, regional labour rates, and parts pricing. Our quote engine uses this data to ensure that every customer receives a fair and accurate price for their specific vehicle and repair.
What if my quote looks wrong?
If you notice a discrepancy in the totals or if something appears incorrect, please contact our support team. In rare cases, parts or labour may not calculate correctly, and we’ll resolve this quickly.
Troubleshooting common quote issues
- The labour subtotal doesn’t add up:
For example, if 1.75 hours at £67.93 should equal around £118, but the quote shows £124, this is usually due to the system applying a variable labour rate. Different rates may be applied depending on the job type and vehicle, which is why the maths may not appear straightforward. - The total price changes when accepting the quote:
Sometimes, a system update or data sync can cause the price shown on the email to differ slightly from the checkout price. If this happens, please contact our support team, and we’ll confirm the correct figure. - Parts don’t look right:
If the cost of parts seems unexpectedly high or inconsistent, this may be due to how the quote engine sources live prices. Again, support can review this and recalculate your quote if necessary.
Key takeaways
- Custom quotes from mechanics = set labour rate
- System-generated quotes = variable labour rate
- Both methods are covered by our 12-month warranty on parts and labour.
